WASHINGTON - Led by U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio, Oregon's congressional delegation appears to have snagged $2.7 billion for the state's highway improvement and mass transit programs in the nation's new five-year federal transportation plan.

The Democrat from Springfield worked for months as a primary negotiator reconciling differences between House and Senate versions of the bill, which will provide $286.4 billion to states through fiscal 2009. A deal was finally struck Wednesday night.

The House and Senate were expected to vote on the transportation bill today, bringing an end to a two-year standoff that hamstrung construction projects in Oregon and across the nation.

Lawmakers had been haggling with the White House over spending levels since the previous federal highway funding program expired in September 2003.
