I'm a big fan of relationships built on a solid foundation of trust. So when I told my boyfriend I was taking him to a Second City show, it wasn't a lie. I just neglected to mention it was called "Girls' Night Out."
OK, very deliberately forgot to mention.
He discovered the awful truth about an hour before curtain, when he picked up the tickets.
"You knew, and you didn't tell me? That's great," he said, pretending to sulk over dinner. "It's going to be all about women's issues. And it's probably a musical, too."
I tried to calm his darkest fears. "No," I said, "it's not a musical."
What else could I say? Certainly not the whole truth-that he was my canary in the comedy-theater coal mine.
