Bill Merrick's love of photography and animals has led him to a most unique volunteer opportunity as a photographer at the Brookfield Zoo.

"I entered the zoo's annual photography contest in 2002. I didn't win," the Elk Grove Village resident said. "I stopped out there to get my pictures back and asked about volunteering opportunities."

Merrick asked to see the photographs that had been on display and began talking with Jim Schulz, staff photographer at the zoo.

"After seeing his photos, when Bill asked about volunteering, I was pleased to tell him about the potential opportunity. We could use another photographer," said Schulz, who photographically documents anything that occurs at the zoo, whether it involves animals, visitors or both.
