Spread over 100 acres of prairie, oak savanna and wetlands, the International Crane Foundation is the protective home to the world's 15 species of cranes. Populated by what are among the oldest living bird species on Earth, it is one of the most tranquil, calming places you could wish to find.

Quiet paths wind through waving stands of tall prairie grasses. Colorful carpets of wildflowers display showy bright yellow and purple coneflowers and the light blue spires of hoary vervain. Wetlands provide habitat for whooping cranes, rarest of all cranes.

Oddly enough, this serene nature preserve is but a few minutes' drive from Wisconsin Dells, Wis., the Midwest's epicenter for high- octane thrill rides. When parents and grandparents are ready for a respite from water slides, go-karts and roller coasters, a tour of the International Crane Foundation provides a nice change of pace.
