It used to be just a quick way to get clean. At most, it was an ideal place to rehearse an upcoming karaoke night. But for a growing number of homeowners, the shower has become much more: a retreat, a home spa and a focal point for the bath.
For today's bathroom design, the shower is taking precedence over the whirlpool tub, said Katherine Flaherty, vice president of building for the Merchandise Mart, who also oversees LuxHome, a collection of 29 luxury boutiques for home building and renovating.
"It's something you have to do every day. You might as well enjoy it," Flaherty said.
The emphasis on showers as a luxury-bath experience makes sense, considering today's fast-paced lifestyle.
"It gives you immediate satisfaction with less time, so you can get the experience without having to dedicate a half-hour for a soak," Flaherty said.
