Article Excerpt THE STORY OF THE RAISING OF LAZARUS could keep a preacher busy well beyond the lectionary's recommended times of Lent 5 in Year A and All Saints Day. I have used it as an Easter text, and the dialogue with Martha is a common reading at funerals. This text can be used as a comfort, as a hope, and as a challenge.
THE HUMANITY OF JESUS
Raymond Brown (The Gospel According To John I-XII: Introduction, Translation, and Notes, AB 29 [New York: Doubleday, 1966] 427-30) shows how this chapter serves as a bridge between what he calls the "Book of Signs" in the first part of John and the "Book of Glory" in the last part of the gospel. John 11 nicely combines one of the strongest signs of Jesus' divinity with the many ways in which Jesus was also fully human.
For one thing, Jesus had friends. Jesus seems to have arranged for a place to stay whenever his travels took him to Jerusalem and its environs. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus appear to have been the friends who took him into their Bethany home. He stayed there with them and is said to have loved them (vv. 3-5). Jesus...
