For a decade now, the Western world has been enjoying an economic boom, organised largely around an expansion of consumer spending by a section of the population. Quantitatively, the boom does not compare in magnitude to the expansion of the western economy in the two and a half decades following the Second World War, nor is it of the same nature qualitatively, yet it has been sufficiently ample to mark the 90s and 00s as different in character to the recession- prone 70s and 80s.
