I recently blocked three consecutive days off my calendar, boarded a plane, and flew to Washington, D.C. Once there, I and nearly 90 fellow women trial lawyers took part in Lobby Days, a biennial event sponsored by the ATLA Women Trial Lawyers Caucus to allow women members a chance to meet with their congressional representatives and tell them how proposed legislation, like medical malpractice damages caps, will hurt consumers.

It was an exhilarating experience from the first day, when I joined my sisters of the trial bar at an information session in a hotel meeting room. Even now, decades into the women's movement, women trial lawyers rarely get a chance to bond with each other en masse.

Old friends greeted each other warmly and new friendships were instantly made. Between the lectures on lobbying strategy, the status of current tort "reform" measures, and the dos and don'ts of Capitol Hill etiquette, we found time to talk about our cases, sharing practice tips and heartbreaking stories about our clients' plights.
