Although 'talking about the weather' is a ubiquitous human activity, anthropologists, until now, have said surprisingly little on the subject. Ethnographers have provided details of rituals relating to the weather, such as rainmaking ceremonies, and recorded culturally defined seasonal categories. Some anthropologists have considered the effects of extreme weather or longer-term climate change, and adaptive responses to these. And it could be said that weather appears, in the background, in many ethnographic accounts. Yet, despite its omnipresence, human relationships with the weather have been rather left out in the cold as a subject of study.
