It has been a tough few weeks for personal computer users. Or at least for users of computers run by operating systems from the 1800 pound gorilla from Redmond. Various flavors of Microsoft's Windows operating systems are the juiciest targets of talented, and not so talented, programmers. (I'm certain that other operating systems have their own vulnerabilities, but why attack a relatively small number of computers, when you can go after so many more working with Windows.)

If a programmer has a good idea as to how to make Windows work a little bit better, he will try to sell it into to the huge market place of Windows users. If a programmer doesn't have any ideas it isn't difficult (I am told) to find a known Windows vulnerability and build upon it, exploiting it in a slightly new, but very negative way.
