Ficano pushes for new tri-county lockup

Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano said Friday that he would name former Michigan Treasurer Doug Roberts to head a commission to study creation of a regional jail.

Roberts, now interim director of the MSU Institute for Public Policy and Research, would lead a commission to include sheriffs of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, top law-enforcement officials from Detroit and the suburbs, as well as government and business leaders.

Ficano said it is too early to say how much the new jail would cost and where it might be. Tax increases are not an option, however, Ficano said. "This will have to be revenue neutral.''

Ficano said it now costs Wayne County about $85 million a year to operate its two jails...
