When Rick Chesbrough completed his medical degree at Wayne State University in 1984, he planned to be a surgeon. But after a year into an internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, Calif., and visits to Stanford University's new magnetic resonance imaging unit, Chesbrough saw his future in radiology.

"I was seeing these MRI images and realized the days of doing exploratory surgery on patients to diagnose their illnesses were pretty much over. I could see we were going to do all that through imaging, which is exactly what happened,'' Chesbrough said.
