Rather than take over his father's business, Tom Devine III started his own electrical contracting company. But his father did pass on to him insights about running a business--especially the importance of customer service.

Devine said his father "wanted to make sure every customer is happy, whatever it takes, so they would always call you back on the next job. That's customer satisfaction--always No. 1. Keep them happy, otherwise the phone's not going to ring."

The phone rings quite a bit at Healy Electric Contracting in White Plains and Healy Datacom Corp., a sister company. Their combined revenues rose by more than 50 percent in 2004, though Healy Datacom grew faster.
