PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Brazil is among the world's top ethanol producers enabling local fuel distributors blend anhydrous ethanol with gasoline while hydrous ethanol is used to power specially designed vehicles. Brazil exported 560 million liters of ethanol in 2003 and this volume has been forecasted to increase to some 1.5 billion liters in 2004. In so doing, the Brazilian government is now striving to boost ethanol exports to promising markets such as China and Japan. The government thus now holding talks with its Chinese counterpart to also provide the technology for producing ethanol-fuelled engines. Japan, on the other hand, has recently approved legislation allowing anhydrous ethanol to be mixed with its gasoline to meet Kyoto protocol requirements

As a result, the state-owned PETROLEO BRASILEIRO S.A. (PETROBRAS) is gearing-up to expand existing pipelines that transport ethanol. The project in question is to be implemented by its pipeline subsidiary PETROBRAS TRANSPORTE S.A (TRANSPETRO) and include a search for joint venture partners. Construction plans under consideration call for building 790 kilometers of pipelines as well as install the necessary infrastructure to take ethanol from a refinery in Sao Paulo state to Petrobras' terminals on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
