County lawmakers last week nominated an African American for Westchester Medical Center's board, but one legislator vowed to continue pressing for more minority members on the panel to oversee the deficit-plagued hospital.

Clinton Young (D-Mount Vernon), majority leader of the Board of Legislators, succeeded in his third attempt to shepherd a minority candidate Jan. 4 when the lawmakers approved Helen Blackwood's nomination.

Blackwood--Mount Vernon's corporation counsel since 2001--would replace Gene A. Capello, the med center's chairman, one of five incumbents ousted last month.
