Yorktown proposes more office space, less retail.

Yorktown will hold hearings this week on proposed land-use guidelines that seek to curb new retail space and housing but almost triple office space to be built over the next 20 years.

The guidelines, or "comprehensive plan," would reduce by 15 percent to 477,000 square feet retail space. Not included in the total is an additional 200,000-square-foot proposed expansion by the Jefferson Valley Mall, now under review by the Town Board.

Much of the remaining developable retail space would be within the town's five commercial hamlets, for which new rules are being proposed to make them pedestrian-friendlier.
