Interior designers often need to do creative work on a deadline, so Bergamo Fabrics Inc., a Mount Vernon-based distributor of high-end designer fabric, has tried to make the task of ordering material easy and the wait short.

Bergamo was the first distributor of designer fabric to speed up deliveries using a special Federal Express program and one of the first to accept credit card billing from customers, said Rosecrans Baldwin, chief executive officer and co-owner of the company.

"They're creative people, primarily," Baldwin said of his Customers, who are mostly interior designers. "They don't need the hassle."

Making ordering fast and easy is a large part of the reason why Bergamo grew 18 percent in annual revenues last year, on top of 16 percent growth in 2003. The company, owned by Baldwin and two European fabric manufacturers, does not release revenue figures, but in the past two years, its staff has grown by eight employees, to 36.
