The number of international students enrolled in U.S. higher-education institutions fell by 2.4 percent in the past academic year to 572,509, according to an annual report on international academic mobility published by the Institute of International Education with support from the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

The drop follows minimal increase the prior year (0.6 percent in 2002-03), preceded by five years of steady growth. The drop in enrollments in 2003-04 is the first absolute decline in foreign enrollments since 1971-1972 (when enrollments dropped 3 percent to 140,126).
