Lawyers group offers a less-stressful way to divorce.

Divorce doesn't have to be as antagonistic and expensive as it often is or take as long as it usually does, say some area divorce lawyers who are offering an alternative way to end a marriage.

In the "collaborative-law" process, both husband and wife meet together with their lawyers to reach a settlement, which is then brought before a court for final approval.

Lawyers, who have settled divorces using this method, say the process is shorter compared with traditional divorce litigation, and, therefore, less costly.

"The litigation process lends itself to making things confrontational," said Neil Kozek, a White Plains lawyer. Collaborative-law cases comprise about 25 percent of his divorce practice. "The collaborative-law process lends itself to a less confrontational, more open and cooperative setting."
