EDITOR'S NOTE: This is a sampling of letters received in response to President Bush's Tuesday evening speech on the Iraq war. At press time, the newspaper had not received any letters praising the speech.

U.S. goal is unclear in Iraq

After yet another speech from our president repeating the same misleading rhetoric and dangerous distortions of truth regarding the current situation in Iraq and the American position there, I am moved to express my concern.

It has become increasingly clear that there was no connection between Iraq and al-Qaeda, there were no weapons of mass destruction and there has never been a legitimate threat from Saddam Hussein. Even so, thousands of people are being killed - Americans and Iraqis - a nation is being torn apart, and American legitimacy in the Middle East and the world is eroding faster than ever.

The problems go on, and yet, blindly, so does our administration - toward a goal that is unclear, and on a path that has become incredibly unstable. While there are numerous ways we might disentangle ourselves from the mess in Iraq, we must first call on our government to at least admit that a new approach is necessary, and call on it to pursue these new ends immediately.

Putting aside all arguments from left to right, we as a nation - the public and the politicians that represent us - must realize that it is in everyone's best interest to understand that as the world's great power, we do...
