In the three months to April, the seasonally adjusted chained volume index or the distribution industries decreased by 0.3 per cent compared with the three months to January.

Motor trades was the most significant contributor to the fall.

Wholesale also decreased in output while output from the retail trade was unchanged. Between March and April distribution output rose by 0.3 per cent. This was due to increases for both the wholesale and retail trades though these were partially offset by a fall in the motor trades. However, monthly growth rates are volatile (see background note 3).

Change of reference and base year from 2001 to 2002 The reference and base year for chained volume estimates has moved forward from this release i.e. updated from 2001 to 2002 as part of annual chain-linking. Motor trades

In the latest three months output from the motor trades decreased by 1.4 per cent compared with the previous three months. The most significant decrease was in the sale of motor vehicles; the sale of automotive fuel also decreased in output.

Motor trades output decreased by 1.8 per cent between March and April due mainly to a decrease in the sale of motor vehicles.
