SALEM - With relatives, Bob Thye neither hid nor spoke about the fact that he was gay.

His Uncle Frank assumed Bob was gay. But it wasn't until Frank advertised in the newspaper his own views on homosexuality that the two of them discussed Thye's sexual orien- tation.

Thye's uncle is Sen. Frank Morse, an Albany Republican and a co-sponsor of legislation that would create civil unions for same-sex couples.

The Oregon Legislature's deliberations over civil unions for same-sex couples has, for many lawmakers on both sides of the issue, been a matter of personal values. But for a handful of legislators - some opposed to civil unions and some in favor of them - the issue is one that bears consequences for a son or daughter, brother or nephew.

Well before Morse sponsored the civil unions legislation, he took out ads in his local newspaper, expressing his general support for gay rights. He explained that he believed that sexual orientation is determined at birth and that "in all relationships, we are called to treat one another with dignity, respect and love."
