VF Corp., the $6 billion holding company behind Wrangler and Lee jeans, Vanity Fair lingerie, and a number of other apparel brands, was so smitten by the potential of San Diego's Reef brand that it paid $188 million cash for the surf-inspired company this spring.

This for an outfit that has its foundations in beach sandals, a slightly irreverent attitude and revenue of $75 million during 2004.

Executives with VF, a Fortune 500 company based in North Carolina, say the investment is worth it, as Reef has growth potential and is a brand steeped in authenticity.
