These days dancers are encouraged to condition not only to be stronger and avoid injury, but also so classical movers can contract with the best Graham practitioners and modernists can pirouette on a dime. "Dance has come a long way, and so much more is required these days," says New York City Ballet principal Kyra Nichols, just back from a Pilates class with Anthony Rabara, formerly of Les Ballets Trocadero de Monte Carlo.

The question is, which system--Pilates or Gyrotonic--to use? Does body type dictate one or another approach? Does one system address certain problems more than another? Originally, Nichols began Pilates to gain more flexibility. "I don't have an extreme arabesque," she says....
