The other factor that needs to be considered in any design of operation's criteria is the inter relationship of these heating modes during operation as temperatures increase different modes become dominant. This can impact heat up, penetration, soak times and cool down. A system can be designed, which will use these heal transfer criteria to the benefit of furnace operation and productivity.

Heat can be moved from one place to another in three ways:

* Conduction--heat transfer though solid objects; eg Spoon in hot coffee

* Convection--heal transfer by moving fluid; eg Hair dryer

* Radiation--heat transfer by electromagnetic waves; eg The sun
