...days of Hitler. Ironically, what makes Downfall such a powerful film is the way writer-producer Bernd Eichinger balances this against Hitler's humanity.

The problem dramatically and historically of portraying Hitler as a monster of destructiveness and evil is that you ignore the capable politician of the 1930s, his genuine kindness to his intimates, and that before the monumentally corrupt Dr Morrell began to feed him dangerous concoctions of drugs, the Fuhrer was a fascinating conversationalist--widely read with an impressive understanding of architecture, music and art. Even Mein Kampf is not an unmitigated bore. The chapter on propaganda is chillingly incisive and in the early days even his military judgment had moments of inspiration.

None of this is an excuse for Hitler. But unless you understand the humanity, it is impossible to comprehend how he was able to gain the loyalty--not just of the thugs of the SA or psychopaths like Himmler, but men of genuine ability and integrity like Albert Speer, Rommel, or even the tank expert Hans Guderian who, when the scales...
