On my way to scatter the ashes of my late wife, Pam, at Cape Cod, I stayed with friends near Columbus, Ohio. They took me to dinner at a village tavern.

Despite (or because of) a local ordinance banning workplace smoking, the place was packed. We spent more than $100 on dinner and drinks. Given Pam's death from a smoker's cancer, we wouldn't have entered had the proprietor permitted puffing.

Next morning, The Columbus Dispatch ran an editorial calling for a statewide workplace smoking ban. It said city-by-city efforts had improved human health, so all of Ohio should follow suit.
