Not until you travel with the handicapped and the elderly can you truly appreciate their trials and tribulations while traveling.

My parents, husband and I recently took an ambitious trip to Washington, D.C. We planned for the weather, timed the tours for the shortest lines, but forgot to plan for one major snafu: maneuvering a disabled traveler.

My dad is mobility-, visually- and hearing-impaired. With the advent of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, we figured that enhanced handicap-accessibility should pave the way for smooth sailing.

Wrong.

Preparing for the challenges, but...
