I almost woke up American this morning. The metamorphosis has been threatening for decades. Call me anti- American, but I feel lucky to have resisted so long. Lying on American sheets, listening to American pop on the clock radio, I unavoidably recalled Groundhog Day. After washing with American plumbing and drying with an American towel, I shaved with an American razor and donned American underpants. From the American cereal in my breakfast bowl to the American toothbrush in my mouth--and after nearly five decades of cultural immersion --I was clearly in danger of waving Old Glory. How did this erosion of Australian national identity begin?
