Walking the two kilometres from our campsite to the Baxter Detention Centre I noticed over the desert skyline a blaze of lights on Good Friday night and I thought how close Port Augusta must be. I was only to discover these city lights were in fact the lights of the Baxter centre, a vast concentration-style camp.

Outside the razor wire, there is nowhere to hide, nowhere to run. There is a sense of total isolation. I was here by choice, but 250 people inside were locked down in 'Compound B', without charge, without trial, locked in a desert purgatory. Peter Quasim, the longest serving detainee, has been locked in Baxter for six and a half years and has described his existence as living in an excruciating limbo. Cornelia Rau's 'disappearance' into Baxter increasd media attention just as the Howard Government hoped the issue...
