It's a frigid Minnesota January morning as I launch into my second executive secretary's report. In the face of a minus 33 degree windchill, I feel the good Melville Society business and pleasure of 2004, here and now, very much like a "warm spark in the heart of an arctic crystal."

I am pleased to formally announce and congratulate the new officers whom we have elected: President Edgar Dryden, Historian Christopher Sten, MLA Chair Geoffrey Sanborn, ALA Chair Carol Colatrella, Helen Trimpi to the Murray Endowment Committee, and John Samson to the Cohen Prize Committee. As her final duty in office, outgoing President Mark K. Bercaw Edwards appointed Henry Hughes to serve on the Nominating Committee.

The American Literature Association convened May 27-30, in San Francisco, with the Melville Society panel ably chaired and moderated by Jonathan Cook on the theme "Re-reading Redburn and White-Jacket." Presenters were Elizabeth Addison, Western Carolina University--"Reading White-Jacket in the Millennium"; Peter Norberg, Saint Joseph's University--"'Without Hope of Any Permanent Relief': Urban Poverty in Redburn": and Steven Olsen-Smith, Boise State University--"Redburn's 'Prosy Old Guidebook' Revisited."
