Many immigrants and refugees arrive in America with little or no luggage.

For financial or practical reasons, they have to leave most, if not all, of their personal possessions behind.

Those lucky enough to bring a suitcase or two usually fill them with clothes, personal hygiene items and family photos.

But sometimes they'll stick in a sentimental item: an old cookbook in their native language. A grandmother's ring. A childhood diary.

No matter what other possessions they eventually acquire, these special things from home remain some of their most treasured belongings.

Gotta have coffee

Two months ago, Fiyori Tadesse, 18, and Temesgen Manengena, 27, were living in a thatch-roofed hut in an Ethiopian refugee camp. They fled there four years ago to escape the violence and political unrest in their native (and neighboring) Eritrea.
