Alexis Reyna had no ticket to the 2003 Prefontaine Classic track and field meet.
But he went to the sport's storied venue, Hayward Field, anyway. Hoping, he said, to get a glimpse of Ana Guevara.
"I went to the fence and peeked through," said Reyna, an account executive with Eugene-based Churchill Media. "I saw the celebration."
And he joined it, a flag-waving throng whose national pride spilled onto and all around the famed track.
Moments earlier, Guevara had run and won the women's 400 meters, and had done so in a meet- and field-record time of 49.34 - the first woman to break 50 seconds at Hayward Field.
Guevara went on to win the World Championship that season and collected a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
On Saturday, she returns to Hayward Field. Reyna will have his ticket for the 31st running of the IAAF Grand Prix meet.
"You see her on television, hear her on the radio and read about her in the newspaper," he said, "but you want to be there."
