Green groups are asking urban dwellers in Eugene to rise up and stop the harvest of big old trees on federal land in the McKenzie River watershed.

They're arguing that mature and old growth forests are essential filters for the city drinking water. And that the big trees are a more important backdrop for outdoor play, now, than a source of wood fiber for industry.

"We should be past this. This should be part of our history - logging these kinds of stands," said Jeremy Hall, field representative for the Oregon Natural Resources Council.

A near majority of the Eugene City Council bought that reasoning. Seven members approved a measure last week that calls for a ban on logging federal forests greater than 80 years old within the McKenzie watershed.

The lone dissenter was City Councilor Jennifer Solomon, granddaughter of legendary late timberman Stub Stewart.

Putting big publicly owned timber entirely out-of-bounds for logging doesn't make any sense, industry sources say.
