...disease, the American College of Physicians (ACP) created the ACP Initiative on Lyme Disease. The project, implemented in a cooperative agreement with the CDC, was designed to:

* Improve physicians' early recognition and secondary prevention of the disease.

* Reduce inappropriate diagnostic testing and treatment of patients in whom Lyme disease is suspected.

* Convey more clearly when patients with Lyme disease should be referred for specialist care.

* Increase reporting of Lyme disease cases for CDC surveillance efforts.

* Encourage development of local consensus regarding Lyme disease evaluation that is consistent with the framework of national practice guidelines.
