During the Seattle protests against the World Trade Organisation in 1999, I was sitting with a group of well-meaning young people here in Brisbane. At one point, a young man burst out, with visible frustration: 'Why don't they just free trade?!' Everyone else agreed. It seemed so obvious. After all, one of them had a 'Free Tibet' sticker on their guitar case. Surely this was just another struggle for freedom? But when I explained that 'free trade' was one of the things that the Seattle protesters were arguing against, they became perplexed.
We may well smile at this, but we would be remiss not to examine its implications. For behind this example lies a more general point about how we talk about politics.
