School: Home. With the exception of third and fourth grade at Emerald Junior Academy in Pleasant Hill, he's been home-schooled all his life.

Passion: Classical saxophone, which he has played since the sixth grade. He was introduced to it through the private, Springfield-based Logos Academy Home School Center, which offers classes in band, math, science, Spanish and more. The Logos band has won numerous competitions.

Scholar of note: Leavitt this month was named a 2005 Presidential Scholar in the Arts, an honor shared by only 20 students in the United States and Puerto Rico. Candidates qualify with a nomination through the nationwide Arts Recognition and Talent Search, conducted by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.
