Diane "Butch" Miller is the 2005 inductee into the Eugene Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame for meritorious service. Miller began bowling in the early 1950s at U-Bowl, an eight-lane basement establishment at 29 W. 11th Ave., beneath what is now LTD's Eugene Station. In 1955 she began league play at the New U Bowl on South Willamette Street, a modern facility with automatic pin-setters instead of pin boys, that later became Webfoot Lanes and today is Southtowne Lanes. Miller, who also served as league secretary for decades, recalls bowling at Fairfield Lanes (now Strike City), Firs Bowl, Emerald Lanes and the former Y-Bowl in Junction City. But it was at the former Empire Bowl on Highway 99 North that Miller and her husband remember hours of practice on undulating lanes in a Quonset-type structure at 25 cents a line. After a half-century in the sport, Miller continues as a league bowler, but has switched from her 12 1/2 -pound "hook ball" to a 10-pound "straight ball."
