According to Alaska Economic Trends, produced by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, oil and gas employment is expected to grow modestly this decade. Direct employment in the oil industry is expected to be 10,200 in 2012. It was 1,400 in 2002. If high oil prices and production increases continue, there could be additional growth.
In 1988, oil production on the North Slope peaked at 2.2 million barrels per day. The Department of Revenue projects it to fall to about 408,000 barrels per day in 2021. However, exploration in other fields will offset some of that decline. The DOR is projecting that about six new fields will be in production by 2012.
