This latest book from the justly renowned Stanford historian Peter Stansky is direct in its aims and nuanced in its presentation. It looks at Sir Philip Sassoon and his sister Sybil, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, great-grandchildren of the founder of the family fortunes, David Sassoon, to address the "compelling question how and to what degree new groups are accepted in English society: the nuances of acceptance and rejection" (p. x). Stansky has written a subtle and complex history of how the Sassoons were perceived in English Society particularly during the lifetimes of Philip (1888-1939) and Sybil (1894-1989) and their contributions to the worlds of politics and art, in peacetime and during war, a project that had its seeds in the author's graduate work and took root on his more recent trip to India.
