The European Left has been well served of late by Eley's Forging Democracy (2002), Callaghan's The Retreat of Social Democracy (2000), and Sassoon's One Hundred Years of Socialism (1996). Favretto's study parallels today's Third Way with the post-war reformist left's pursuit of a route between communism and capitalism. Like Third Wayers, Labour revisionists and Italian autonomists (Nenni's distancing of the PSI from communism after 1956), saw themselves adapting to new conditions and were accused of betraying socialism. But Favretto holds the Third Way is more than revisionism redivivus. What "sets today's 'Third Way' apart from any earlier revisionism is the renunciation of the long-term aspiration of replacing capitalism with socialism" (p. 172).
