In this vigorously argued book, Patrick Brantlinger, a doyen of Victorian cultural studies, returns to an important aspect of the "discourse of imperialism," which his best-known work, Rule of Darkness: British Literature and Imperialism, 1830-1914 so influentially explored some sixteen years ago. Rule of Darkness became a critical reference point for that generation of scholars--in History as well as English departments--who were inspired by Foucault and Said to search for images of the Other in both high and popular Western literature, representations that both reflected and served to entrench imperialist domination at home and abroad. Though it mines a central and important theme, the once-common presumption that "primitive races" were fated to die out in the modern world, Dark Vanishings perhaps inevitably seems less of a companion volume than an exhaustively elaborated afterthought.
