Leslie Williams's study of British newspaper reporting of the Irish Famine of 1845-50 is a fresh and valuable contribution to what had begun to seem an overworked field. In contrast to the politicised rhetoric that has marred much recent writing, she starts with a clear recognition that the British government's response to the disaster arising from the loss of the potato crop represented a considerable financial and administrative investment.
