If Colin Matthew was correct in suggesting that it is unlikely that anyone person could write a definitive biography of William Gladstone, so vast is the undertaking, then conversely the field will always be open to new studies of the Grand Old Man. It is no wonder, then, that Gladstone biographies like that of Michael Partridge's will continue to appear. Although Partridge makes no pretension at being exhaustive, his text is a comprehensive and multi-layered study of this larger than life man.
