Edward Bulwer-Lytton remains among the least studied of the major literary figures of the nineteenth century. Lionized on the Continent during his lifetime, he was never embraced quite as enthusiastically at home, though he was eventually rewarded for his achievements as man of letters and homme d'affaires with a peerage in 1866 and a plot in Westminster Abbey (against his stated wishes) on his death in 1873. His stock plummeted soon thereafter, however, and it is only the past three decades that have witnessed a slight resurgence of interest in his work. Leslie Mitchell notes this state of affairs...
