The Royal Institution of Great Britain received its Royal Charter in 1800. Its founders established it with the aims of diffusing knowledge and introducing useful mechanical inventions, as well as teaching how science could be applied to the "common Purposes of Life" through courses of lectures and experiments. The pursuit of original research was added to its objectives within short order, very largely due to the efforts of Humphry Davy, despite such a goal being "never envisaged, or indeed intended, by its founders"...
