Historians have written much about the relationship between Roman Catholicism and the broader early Victorian culture over the last quarter century or so. Sheridan Gilley, Mary Heimann, Derek Holmes, G. I. T. Machin, Edward Norman, and John Wolffe, to name only a few, have considered the internal history of that church as well as its interactions with both the reforming governments of Sir Robert Peel and Lord John Russell and its anti-Catholic enemies. Roman Catholicism as a problem in diplomacy in this era, however, has not attracted the same amount of interest. Although a few articles in learned journals complement Ottavio Barie's two-volume L 'Inghilterra e il problema italiano, 1846-1849 (1954-1965), most of the attention of both anglophone and Italian scholars has been focused on the decades of the 1850s and 1860s.
