Helen Berry's new work is a reasoned and cogent analysis of an under-researched periodical source that is rapidly becoming of interest to the scholarly community. While recent articles have concentrated upon the scientific content of the Athenian Mercury, Berry's recent work is a welcome addition to studies of the interrelationships between early modern English print culture and gender. The Athenian Mercury (1691-97), edited by John Dunton, was the first question-and-answer coffeehouse newspaper, with subscribers writing the inquiries and anonymous editors--self-styled as the "Athenian Society"--providing the responses. The Athenian Mercury was the "only seventeenth-century periodical to appeal deliberately to both male and female readers," and a large proportion of reader questions were about the body, courtship, and sexual behavior (p. 6).
