Felicity Heal's magisterial account of religious Reform in the Atlantic archipelago opens with an account of Bishop John Bale's flight from Ireland in 1553, reflecting the end of the moment when Reforming enthusiasms had briefly collided with the "official" Reformation. The rest of Heal's account of the (primarily Protestant) Reformations in the "four nations" explores the tensions between the development of new doctrines and the institutions designed to promote them; exploring how the process of Reform was shaped by its political, social, and cultural contexts. Her emphasis upon the concurrent progress of Reform in the geographically close, but politically disparate, realms of Britain and Ireland highlights that process, producing an account of "Reformation" that stresses how church politics...
