One of the more welcome developments in medieval and early modern English history in the last two decades is the emergence of socio-legal, as opposed to traditional, legal history. Scholars such as Cynthia Herrup, Douglas Hay, John Langbein, Peter King, J. A. Sharpe, and J. M. Beattie, exemplify the newer approach, making use of legal and administrative records to expand our knowledge of how people from all sections of society lived, loved, worked, and died. Michael Braddick, Steve Hindle, and John Walter, among others, deploy these records to elucidate the expansion of the early modern state. It is to the socio-legal camp that K. J. Kesselring belongs and to which her fine, nuanced, and well-researched book contributes. She uses the royal pardoning power and other vehicles of mercy as windows through which to study both abstract notions of justice, legitimacy, and the growth of state-power, and the nitty-gritty aspects of criminal behavior, popular uprisings, and social relationships.
